The Győr Air Conditioning Lighting Company was founded on August 21, 1868, to build public lighting in Győr, and its financial conditions were created by the citizens of the city. The prerequisite for the establishment of public and private gas lighting was the creation of gas technology, the construction of the pipe network, the installation of lighting fixtures, and the provision of appropriate professional personnel. The city provided a 2,700-square-meter plot of land on the northern side of the Buda highway for the gas factory to be established. The city gas was obtained from coal, and two water-tight gas tanks were built to store the gas. 5-6 people worked at the plant. Regular gas production and service began at the beginning of 1869. Based on a contract, the company received exclusive gas service rights from the city for 80 years. The gasworks dictated the service conditions without competition, while Győr's public lighting was among the weakest in the country. In 1899, the city's electric power plant was established to counterbalance the gasworks' monopoly on service. After a long litigation, the city managed to take over the gasworks from the joint-stock company in 1911. As a result of the cooperation between the city-run gas and electricity supply plants, developments began and the service improved. The gas factory, which was almost completely destroyed in the air raids on Győr during World War II in 1944, was rebuilt by 1947. In 1967, the factory became the property of the National Oil and Gas Trust, and in the same year, the Transdanubian Gas Production and Service Company was founded with headquarters in Győr by merging the Szombathely and Sopron plants. The natural gas pipeline reached Győr in 1974, and within about two years, the city switched from using city gas to using natural gas. This marked the end of the era of city gas production in Győr. Thanks to natural gas, the amount of gas consumption and the number of gas consumers have started to increase dramatically. The Győr Plant of MVM Égáz-Dégáz Natural Gas Network Zrt. is located at 37 Puskás Tivadar u. |

DETAILED COMPANY HISTORY |
The citizens of Győr founded the Győr Gas Lighting Company on August 21, 1868, with the aim of establishing a gas factory and starting gas service in the city, which was brought into being by the need for public lighting. The city designated the plot of land for the gas factory on the north side of the Buda highway, slightly away from the residential area.
At the beginning of 1869, the gas factory was put into operation, and gas service could begin in the city. The production unit consisted of a 2-, 4- and 7-retort system furnace. Initially, the gas was used to operate 56 public lighting lamps. In addition to its use for lighting, domestic use only began in 1887. The gas factory soon had about two thousand consumers, and 250 lamps were lit in the city of Győr.
In 1899, due to the increasing demand for gas, the production equipment was reconstructed: the new 6, 8 and 9 retort generator system furnaces were already capable of producing 4000 m3 of gas per day. In addition to the renovation of the supporting technological equipment, a new 3000 m3 gas holder was also built.
In 1911, the gas factory became the property of the city, and the second major reconstruction began: the furnace park was rebuilt and a new 3,000 m 3 gas storage tank was built.
In 1918, the plant had to be shut down due to wartime coal shortages, and production and service only resumed in July 1922. During the four-year shutdown, the pipeline suffered serious damage, so the reconstruction of the furnace park and the increase in the number of retorts began. The work was completed in 1930, after which production doubled.
On April 13, 1944, the factory was hit by an air raid, the extent of destruction was approximately 90%.
Between 1945 and 1947, the most necessary production units and other related systems were restored.
In April 1947, production began with a 6-chamber Didier-system furnace, and within two years, production capacity was expanded with another Didier-system furnace.
In 1950, three Koller-system lignite generator plants operating at the Hungarian Wagon and Machine Works were connected to the gasworks, significantly increasing the available capacity, but somewhat deteriorating the quality of the final product.
In 1954, in order to make the service safer, a spherical gas storage facility with an operating pressure of 5 atmospheres and a capacity of 20,000 m 3 was built . In the following years, despite the continuous capacity expansion and production modernization, a capacity-increasing investment combined with a change in technology became necessary.
In 1967, the construction of a new gas plant began at the current site at Puskás Tivadar u. 37. The production equipment consisted of two Cifuindusz gasoline splitters with a capacity of 10,000 m 3 /day and the related technological equipment, and the security of supply was ensured by a new 20,000 m 3 telescopic gas holder.
In 1969, on the 100th anniversary of the gas plant's commissioning, the new gas plant began operating, and at the same time, coal-based gas production ceased.
In 1974, the city was connected to the national natural gas network, and the conversion of consumer appliances to natural gas operation began.
In 1976, the transition to natural gas was completed, the natural gas crackers were shut down, and a new era began in the city of Győr: natural gas service began.
